- Understand that early surgical stabilization is recommended for all children with atlanto-occipital dislocation.
- Discuss why halo immobilization and traction are contraindicated in the management of atlanto-occipital dislocation in children.
- Recognize that postoperative hydrocephalus is frequent and that nearly half of children who survive atlanto-occipital will have residual neurologic deficits.
