Activity Steps

Description

The certificate for this activity is for NON-PHYSICIANS.

Malnutrition is a common factor in chronic wounds. The authors identified a need to identify malnutrition in patients treated in outpatient wound care facilities. They conducted a pilot study to develop a nutrition screen tool. The resulting tool, the MEAL Scale, has 4 dichotomous elements, a sensitivity of 91.4% and a specificity of 60.9%. The authors recommend further research to establish the validity and reliability of the tool before widespread use.

Method of Participation in the Learning Process/Evaluation Method

Successful completion of this activity includes reading the entire article and successfully completing the post-quiz and an evaluation form.

Getting the Most out of the Activity

As you prepare to participate in this activity, please reflect on your practice and your patients and identify clinical challenges you hope to have addressed.

While participating in the training, identify ways you can use newly acquired knowledge, strategies, and skills to enhance patient outcomes and your own professional development.

Purpose of Activity

To provide information on the development of a nutrition screening tool using variables believed to be predictive of malnutrition risk in the wound patient population.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Outline the variables present in patients with wounds taken into consideration when the MEAL tool was developed.
  2. Identify the results of the MEAL tool pilot study.
  3. List implications from this study for wound care practice.
