This CME article describes the theory, research, and practice of Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) and how the clinician can implement it in counseling adolescents with substance abuse problems and their families. The author presents an overview of the common approaches to treating adolescent substance abuse, discusses four domains of adolescent development, and uses those domains as a way of elaborating MDFT's goals and its three-stage approach to address adolescent substance abuse. Finally, the article discusses the limitations of MDFT.
