Activity Steps

Description

The authors designed a study to identify patient characteristics with the goal of creating a method to stratify wounds for the probability of healing. Previous studies did not include patient characteristics. The stated goal of the authors was to "create a validated system to predict the healing likelihood of patients with body and heel pressure ulcers incorporating only patient- and wound-specific variables." By identifying patient and wound characteristics, outcomes and quality measures can be reported realistically.

Method of Participation in the Learning Process/Evaluation Method

Successful completion of this activity includes reading the entire article and successfully completing the post-quiz and an evaluation form.

Getting the Most out of the Activity

As you prepare to participate in this activity, please reflect on your practice and your patients and identify clinical challenges you hope to have addressed.

While participating in the training, identify ways you can use newly acquired knowledge, strategies, and skills to enhance patient outcomes and your own professional development.

Purpose of Activity

To provide information regarding the creation of a risk-stratification system to predict the likelihood of the healing of body and heel pressure ulcers (PrUs).

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education activity you will be able to:

  1. Explain the need for a PrU risk stratification tool.
  2. Describe the purpose and methodology of the study.
  3. Delineate the results of the study and development of the Wound Healing Index.
